In this the first book, we meet a young Tom Gentry. On his Virginia farm he encounters drug lords, rude locals, and other strange creatures (specifically a young alien by the name of Mica). Shortly after meeting Mica Tom has a run-in with the local constabulary which leads him to believe that a trip out of town might be benificial. So he ran.........He never knew you could run so far. This book is a hoot, and is one of my favorite books. The three books in the series make for a ripping good pager turner, with characters that radiantly come to life.
I read this trilogy many years ago, and am pleased to see it back in 'print'. This trilogy, 'Slow Funeral', and 'The Illegal Rebirth of Billy the Kid' are my favorites of Ms Ore's books. To me, her voice is blunt and unusual, the aliens are very alien -- just understandable enough that we can relate to them, not humans in costume, truly what you'd expect to meet someday if you met an alien -- and the depiction of Appalachia is right on. I lived in West Virginia for 10 years, so know the mountain culture. And she makes you care for the characters. I'd recommend these books.
This is the story of Tom, 16 y.o. at the opening of the book, and becoming embroiled against his will into his brother's drug making operation.

When a spaceship crashes near their isolated home, Tom takes in the sole surviving alien, which he calls Alpha, and they "talk" through drawings. The expected of course occurs and Alpha's family show up to take him back. But when they leave, it's with Tom, who - as was Mica's (Alpha's real name) wish - then becomes the first earthling ever to be accepted as a Federation cadet.

I found the book's beginning looooooooong, as no character managed to grab my sympathies Tom was a lukewarm human being at best and Mica had no endearing trait as we saw him only through the distant perceptions of Tom. But take heart reader! The very lack that I so despised in Tom is what gives the rest of the book its interesting colors Tom's emotional distance (which is less and less distanced as the story goes on) is exactly what lets him interact without xenophobia or intolerance with a whole range of aliens, whether they be birds, marsupials or whatever. Until his first contact with a sheltered race, and HE then becomes the alien...

"Becoming Alien" provides a lot of food for thoughts. It is also good reading, even through the beginning (and Ore's obsession's with toilets...), and when Tom becomes a real breathing character instead of a distant observer, it becomes really engrossing!

This book (and the three volume series) provides one of the best realized portrayals of a multi-species political entity (and the alien races that make it up) in modern science fiction. In many ways comparable to the diversified sentient species David Brin populated the galaxies with in his Uplift novels, Ore tells the story of how one (and soon several) humans struggle to fit into a society where they are very much in the minority. The protagonist, a human teenager from Virginia, finds himself (through a series of lucky (?) accidents) a cadet, and the sole human representative, in the equivalent of Star Trek's "Star Fleet Academy." Only in this case, instead of a human dominated federation, the aliens, of many species, are dominant. How humans fit into such a system is a major theme of the novels, but alien species share the stage, and in fact humans react to them, not the other way around. In fact, there are more alien than human characters in these novels, something itself unusual, and making these books stand out. The vaguely bat-like Gwyngs are as well described and plausible an alien species as I've seen in SF, and they are but one of many. These books are fun to read but, like life itself, are not all sweetness and light. But if you want to have a sense of how intelligent species in the universe could interact, these books offer a good perspective.
